Man Utd player ratings vs Wolves: Anthony Martial rewards Erik ten Hag faith & Alejandro Garnacho gives Antony a lesson in finishing

The Frenchman put United on their way to a scrappy yet vital win over Wolves before substitute Garnacho made sure with a thumping late finish

Anthony Martial and Alejandro Garnacho fired Manchester United to a badly-needed 2-0 win over Wolves to get their bid to finish in the top four back on track. Martial scored from close range in the first half to complete a quick United counter while Garnacho, making his return from an ankle ligament injury, clinched all three points in stoppage time with a sharp finish off the post on the counter.

It was far from a convincing performance but, after successive away defeats, winning was all that mattered. The result means Erik ten Hag's side are now four points clear of Liverpool, with the Red Devils knowing that Champions League qualification for next season remains in their hands.

GOAL rates Man Utd's players from Old Trafford as Antony – who had a big chance to impress given Marcus Rashford's absence through injury – struggled in front of goal…

David de Gea (6/10):

Was given very little to think about by a toothless Wolves. Nearly ran into trouble when he fled his area to beat Hwang Hee-chan to the ball and was fortunate not to concede a foul.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (8/10):

Excellent once more from a defensive point of view. Made a crunching tackle on Pedro Neto to set up a promising attack and made an important clearance in the box in the second half.

Victor Lindelof (7/10):

Strong performance overall, making plenty of good clearances and tackles.

Raphael Varane (6/10):

Made his first appearance in a month and looked a little rusty at first, making a few sloppy passes. Grew into the game in the second half.

Luke Shaw (7/10):

Back in his usual position of left-back and was solid in defence and attack. Set up Antony with a lovely cross but the Brazilian couldn't take advantage.

Bruno Fernandes (9/10):

Led the team throughout with another spirited performance and split Wolves' defence open for the goal with his through ball to Antony. Produced an even better pass to set Garnacho on his way in added time.

Casemiro (6/10):

Another unconvincing display from the Brazilian. It looks like the long season, despite his breaks for suspensions, has caught up with him.

Christian Eriksen (5/10):

His passing was not as slick as usual and struggled to play incisive through balls.

Antony (6/10):

The Brazilian was wasteful in front of goal again, spurning a good early shooting chance and sending a free header over the bar when he should've done a whole lot better. But he ultimately helped make the difference by playing in Martial for the opening goal.

Anthony Martial (7/10):

Was frequently outmuscled by his opponents but showed clever movement for the first goal, finishing well against Dan Bentley. Despite scoring, he was the first player to be taken off, underlining his lack of stamina.

Jadon Sancho (6/10):

Produced some nice link-up play, including starting the break which led to Martial's goal. However, he again showed an unwillingness to take players on and make things happen.

Wout Weghorst (5/10):

Another ineffectual performance from the Dutch striker.

Fred (7/10):

Made a couple of key interceptions in his time on the pitch.

Harry Maguire (6/10):

Not as convincing as Varane at the back and Wolves had a couple of good moments in the 15 or so minutes he was on the pitch for.

Alejandro Garnacho (8/10):

What a way to mark his comeback after more than two months out injured. The fans were galvanised by his arrival and he gave United the edge they needed late on, showing great spark and composure to put the result beyond doubt.

Erik ten Hag (7/10):

Made three changes and got a response from the team after the dire results at West Ham and Brighton. He also got his substitutions spot on.
