“I Just Don’t See Her As Lara Croft”: Tomb Raider Fans Are On The Fence Over Sophie Turner’s Casting

We’re getting our third live-action adaptation of the Tomb Raider series, with Amazon Prime heading a new TV show. There was a lot of speculation surrounding who would land the role of Lara Croft this time around, and naturally, a lot of fans put forward their idea of who would be best. Ultimately, the role went to none of the leading fancasts, as it was revealed that Sophie Turner will be the next actor to play Lara Croft.

Now, Turner has a lot going for her. She’s British, so the accent won’t be a problem, and she has a lot of experience on TV, since she’s best known for playing Sansa Stark throughout the entire run of Game of Thrones. However, given her previous roles (including a less-than-stellar turn as Jean Grey in the X-Men films), Tomb Raider fans are struggling to see her as Lara Croft, and have mixed feelings about her being cast in the new show.

Tomb Raider Fans Have Their Doubts About The New Prime Show

“Let’s give her a chance,” says Reddit user Los_Mandos_De_Borja, a little more optimistic than other fans. “I’m more worried about the writing of the character than her looks.”

“Adore Sophie Turner. I just find her acting to be… sleepy?” says Nikklus. “Even as Jean Grey, I just don’t think she’s a good fit for a character with as much attitude and personality as Lara. Would love to be proven wrong though!”

Many others share their doubts. “I just don’t see her as Lara Croft,” comments shadow_spinner0. “Yeah, she’s done action before, acting-wise wise she’d be fine as this character. I just don’t see it. I’ll give her the chance. It’s ultimately up to the writing, though.”

Elsewhere, fans say they’re willing to give her the benefit of the doubt since we haven’t seen her in action yet – or even in costume. All we know is that this latest Tomb Raider series is being headed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and will be available on Prime Video.

At the very least, we’re getting more Lara. The last live-action adaptation was the Tomb Raider film in 2018, starring Alicia Vikander. A sequel was in the works, but this was scrapped, rebooting live-action Lara once again. Before all that, we had Angelina Jolie playing Lara Croft in two films in the 2000s.
